Hyperadobe Home in Uganda, Africa
This past summer, we built the first of what we hope to be many teachers home at our partner school, St. Paul. We collaborated with a sustainable Earthship builder from Taos, NM who brought the knowledge of constructing hyperadobe earth homes to St Paul, Nkokonjeru. We then partnered with a Ugandan building crew to make the vision a reality.
Schools in Uganda are expected to provide housing for their staff, and it there is no housing, they must pay their staffs’ rents. This had become a large financial burden for St. Paul School, who was struggling to attract qualified teachers.
Teacher Tonny has been a committed teacher who recently graduated from school with a degree in education. He is a wonderful teacher and visionary for the school. He is now living in this house and laughs that is has become the towns largest tourist attraction with visitors every day coming to see the home. He hopes this attention will bring new students to the school to continue to increase enrollment and we hope to be able to build a second home next year, for another committed school teacher at St Paul.
